Princess Anne, MD - Tiffany Winkfield banked 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks (4-10, 2-6 MEAC) to their second conference win of the season over the Morgan State University Lady Bears (1-16, 1-7 MEAC) on Tuesday evening by the final score, 94-57.
The Lady Hawks bounced back from two consecutive heartbreaking defeats by outscoring the Lady Bears 58-31 in the second half. Laconia Hatcher scored 19 points while teammates LaToshia Bailey added ten points and Quiana Cheatham had 12.
The game started going back and forth with no more than a five point margin. UMES soon took a 10 point lead to end the half 36-26. Almost five minutes into the second half, the Lady Hawks jumped to a 20 point lead that the Lady Bears could not reach. With the Lady Hawks continuing to make shots, the UMES lead grew to 40 points. The Lady Bears fought back, but could only shrink the gap by three points resulting in a 37 point margin and another conference win for the Lady Hawks.
Winkfield recorded her ninth double-double of the season and Hatcher marked her season high with 19 points. Hatcher was also perfect from the free throw line with 7-7 as well as Ckyla Grays who was 6-6.
Jennyffer Vargas led the Lady Bears with 13 points. Teammate Whitney Johnson added 12 points.
The ladies travel this week to challenge Savannah State in Savannah, Georgia on January 29 at 5:30 p.m. and Florida A&M on January 31 at 2:00 p.m. Their next home game will be Monday February 2 at 5:30 p.m. against Bethune -Cookman College.
