LADY HAWKS DROP CONFERENCE OPENER TO LADY HORNETS

Princess Anne, MD - Princess Anne, MD - The University Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks (2-5, 0-1 MEAC) missed a jumper as time expired allowing the Delaware State Lady Hornets (6-3, 1-0 MEAC) to defeat UMES 52-50 Saturday afternoon. Najmah Fauntleroy made the last two consecutive baskets for the Lady Hornet's win.

Tiffany Winkfield led UMES with another double-double by knocking in 16 points and 15 rebounds, but it was not enough to prevent the Lady Hawks from losing their fourth straight game. Terrelle Waller had 22 points and four rebounds to lead Delaware State to the win.

The Lady Hawks had a jump on the score at the beginning of the game with a 6-3 margin. Throughout the game neither team had more than a ten point lead. At the half, the Hornets were barely in the lead by 30-28. With almost two minutes left in the second half, the score was tied 48-48. Faunteleroy made two lay-ups resulting in the score 52-48. With time running down, Tiffany Winkfield made a lay-up that closed the gap but it wasn't enough for the Lady Hawks to win the game. The Hawks stole the ball on the inbound pass and attempted to make another basket to tie the game, but it bounced off the rim and fell short as time expired.

Laconia Hatcher had 10 points and five rebounds. Winkfied and Hatcher were perfect on free throw line, with 2-2 along with teammate Quiana Cheatheam who was 3-3.

Mandy Clark had 13 points for Delaware State while Waller was 4-4 in free throws.

UMES Lady Hawks plays their next home match on Monday, January 5, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. against Howard University in the Hytche Center. That is the last night of the Hawks free children nights. All area children ages K-8th grade can get in free to that game. Admission for adults is eight dollars .
