UMES MOURNS THE LOSS OF FORMER TRACK ATHLETE

Nov. 15, 2004

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Faculty, staff and athletes attended the funeral of Candace Frederick, a former track star, on Saturday, November 13 in Washington DC. The UMES cross country team, upon hearing of her passing, cancelled its trip to NCAA Regional Competition in State College, PA, which was scheduled the same day as her funeral.

Frederick, a four year letter winner from Woodbridge, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, November 10. She was a member of the UMES track and field team from 2000 to 2004.

Frederick, whose main event was sprints, accomplished several accolades during her career at UMES, including finishing as the 2004 women's top performer in the 55 meter run during her senior year. Her time of 7.41 on January 9, 2004 was the highest of the team that season. That season she also finished as the second highest performer on the team in the women's 200 meter dash, finishing in 25.37 on February 14, 2004.

Candace graduated from UMES with a degree in chemistry and had aspirations of attending medical school. Friends and family fondly remember her as "Crystal Lake", the woman who believed that a winner is the one who never gives up.
