FIGHTING HAWKS CAN'T KNOCK OFF PIRATES

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men's basketball team lost their final home game of the season, dropping their senior night contest against the Hampton Pirates, 70-55.

Hampton (13-11, 11-5 MEAC) jumped out to a 9-2 run to open the first half, holding UMES (2-23, 1-15 MEAC) to one basket in the first five minutes of play. A pair of free-throws by Terrell Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin HS) at 11:40 made it 13-8 in favor of the Pirates and three minutes later, the Hawks were able to cut the lead down to three after senior Jareem Dowling (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands/Cecil CC) connected from the charity stripe.

Hampton responded by going on a 12-2 run capped off by a Devin Green lay-up and the Pirates took a double-digit lead for the first time that night, a 13 point advantage, with 5:30 remaining in the first half.

Junior Corey Brown (Ruthville, VA/Mott CC) hit a pair of free-throws at 3:46 to end the Hampton run, but the Pirates held UMES scoreless for the final three minutes of the period and took a quick 6-0 run to put them up by 19 at the break, 36-17. The Hawks shot just 14% from the field in the first half, compared to 48% by Hampton.

The Hawks were led by Brown's six points at the half, while Dowling added five points and two rebounds. Green scored eight to pace the Pirates.

UMES opened the second half on an 8-2 run to close within 13 points of the lead at 17:39, but Hampton forced four Hawk turnovers in the next five minutes, helping the Pirates to a 20 point lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Jared Woodley hit a pair of free-throws at 8:40 to give the Pirates a 56-34 advantage, their largest of the night. UMES was able to cut the lead down to 13 on three separate occasions, but time ran out for the Hawks, as they dropped their last home game of the season by 15 points.

Brown had a game high 19 points to lead UMES, while Tim Parham (Chicago, IL/Ellsworth CC) added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Dowling ended his home career with eight points and four rebounds. Green's 17 points led Hampton, while Bruce Brown and Woodley had 11 and 10, respectively.

The Hawks will return to action on Saturday, February 26 when they play at Coppin State. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
