PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team was swept by Howard in their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup of the season, losing to the Lady Bison 6-0 and 7-2. The wins improve Howard to 6-12 (2-2 MEAC), while the UMES falls to 3-7 (2-2 MEAC).
The Lady Bison got on board early in the first game, scoring their first run at the top of the first inning due an error by Latoya Bailey (Salisbury, MD/Bennett). Howard would get another run in the fifth from Debbie Lee, pushing their advantage to 2-0 after five innings.
Howard broke the game open in the next inning, as a triple by Tracy Javier pushed in two more Lady Bison runs at the top of the sixth. Falton Jones singled up left field in the next at bat, driving in Lee's second run of the game and giving Howard a 5-0 lead. Jill Calhoun scored another run for Howard before UMES was able to stop the floodgates, pushing their advantage to 6-0 at the end of six.
The Lady Hawks got on base at the bottom of the seventh, as Ashley Jones (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) had the third hit of the day for UMES on a double down the middle. But Dale McNeal kept the Lady Hawks scoreless, striking out the next batter to give the Bison their first MEAC victory of the season.
UMES gave up seven runs in their second game of the day, losing to Howard 7-2 in the final game of the afternoon. The Bison had 10 hits in contest, scoring their first five runs in the second inning.
Howard only had two hits in the second inning but Lady Hawk errors, in combination with walks and wild pitches, led to the Bison scoring three unearned runs, helping them cruise to an early 5-0 lead at the top of the second.
Senior Jennifer Wilson (Princess Anne, MD/Washington) got on base for UMES at the bottom of the second due to a Howard fielding error and took advantage of the mishap, scoring the Lady Hawks' first run of the game.
But the UMES follies continued in the fourth inning, as walks and stolen bases led to two more Howard runs, pushing the Bison advantage to 7-1.
UMES tried for a comeback in the sixth, as a single by Maribeth Kulynycz (Princess Anne, MD/Holly Grove Christian) and the combination of an error and a walk left three on base for the Lady Hawks. Senior Marlee Johnson (Stouffville, Ontario/Newmarket) drove in an RBI in her third at bat to score Kulynycz, but Jenille Edwards (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) flied out to left field to give UMES their third out of the inning, ending the momentum for the Hawks.
UMES went for another run at the bottom of the seventh, as an Edwards single loaded the bases with two outs. But the Lady Hawks could not convert as Jillian Johnson struck out the next batter, ending UMES' hopes of mounting a comeback.
Jones collected three hits on the afternoon to lead the Lady Hawks while Lee scored four runs in her seven at bats for Howard.
UMES will play their next four games on the road, participating in Longwood's Lancer Tournament on March 22 and 23.
