PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (4-21) ended a season-high eight-game losing streak with a 4-0 shutout of the Lehigh University (10-9-1) in game two of the afternoon double-header, following the Mountain Hawks 3-0 victory over the Fighting Hawks. The shutout victory was the first for the UMES pitching staff since the 2002-03 season.
In the second game, Ken Richardson (1-4) earned his first collegiate victory as he went four innings scattering four hits and striking out two. Dusty Webster replaced Richardson and went three innings for his first collegiate save in his career. Webster allowed only two base runners over the three innings.
With the pitching staff dominating, Craig Munch gave the offense a lift with his second homerun of the season. With a 3-2 count in the bottom of the third, Munch hit a two-out three-run homerun over the leftfield fence. UMES added the fourth run in the bottom of the fourth as Eric Gaines and Angel Bermudez combined for back-to-back two-out hits.
In game one, the pitching was once again solid as Jason Janeski (0-5) went three and two-thirds innings allowing only single tallies in the first and fourth innings on five hits and no walks. Janeski has yet to win his first collegiate game, but has made six straight starts in which he has allowed three or less earned runs with today's three and two-thirds innings performance being the shortest of them all.
Brad Powell replaced Janeski and allowed a single run in the fifth. James Walls and Daniel Sterling closed out the game each pitching a scoreless inning. However, in game one the Fighting Hawks could not find that timely hit as they left four runners on base over the last four innings, including two in the bottom of the seventh.
On the afternoon, Eric Gaines went 3-5 with a double and a run scored, while Craig Munch went 3-6 with three RBI's and a run scored.
