WASHINGTON DC - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team gave up five unearned runs, including the extra inning game winner, in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader loss to Howard Wednesday afternoon at Bannekar Field. The Lady Bison took game one 2-0 and won the second 4-3 in eight innings.
UMES (3-19, 2-8 MEAC) got their only hit in the first game from junior Jenille Edwards (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas Aquinas SS) . Edwards got her base hit for the Lady Hawks in the fourth inning with one out, but was left stranded after the next two batters went down in order.
Howard (12-15, 6-2 MEAC) scored both of their runs in the sixth inning, as Ashley Webb and Rischelle Charles scored unearned runs due to an outfield throwing error. UMES was not able to mount a comeback in the seventh, and the Lady Bison walked away with the 2-0 victory.
The Lady Hawks took an early lead in the second game as Edwards drove in Marlee Johnson (Stouffville, Ontario, Canada/Newmarket) for the first run of the game. Jennifer Wilson (Princess Anne, MD/Washington) doubled in the next at bat to send Edwards across the plate while Latoya Bailey (Salisbury, MD/Bennett) had a sacrifice fly to drive Wilson home and give UMES the 3-0 lead after half an inning.
Howard added two unearned runs at the bottom of the first and fifth to close within one of the lead and later tied everything up in the seventh, as Webb drove in Debbie Lee to pull even with the Lady Hawks.
UMES tried to mount something in the extra inning, as designated player Ashley Jones (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) was placed on second and Edwards advanced to first off of an infielding error to get on base for the Lady Hawks with no outs.
But they were left stranded, and Tamra Jordan scored the game winning run for the Lady Bison at the bottom of the inning off of a throwing error by Bailey to seal the come from behind victory for Howard.
Johnson, Edwards and Wilson each had a run for UMES on the day, while Lee finished 3-6 on the day for the Lady Bison.
The Lady Hawks return to Hawks Field on Saturday, April 9, as they host Coppin State in a 2:00pm doubleheader.
