LADY HAWKS FALL TO CONFERENCE LEADING LADY EAGLES, 61-40

BALTIMORE, MD - The Lady Hawks dropped their decision to the conference leading Lady Eagles Monday night. UMES lost to Coppin State, 61-40, in a road decision at the Coppin Center.

The victory was the Eagles 17th consecutive over a league opponent and their ninth overall as they improve to 10-8 and 9-0 in conference play. The Lady Hawks drop to 7-10 overall and 5-4 in league play.

The Lady Hawks were led by Baltimore native Toni Kennedy who notched 11 points and tied DeVaughn Hailey (Camden, N.J.) for the team in rebounds with six. Shalamar Oakley and Rashida Suber led Coppin's offense with 13 points each.

Coppin's defense held the Lady Hawks to shooting just 28 percent from the field and forced 24 turnovers, resulting in UMES tying their lowest point total of the season.

Coppin opened the game with an 11-0 run that stretched to a 20-2 lead with 6:48 left in the half. The Eagles held the Lady Hawks to just four field goals in the opening half while they shot 50 percent from the field behind Williams' 10 points.

The Eagles led all the way and held 20 point leads with 9:34 and 7:22 left in the game before taking their largest lead of the game, 61-37, with 1:21 left to play.

The maroon and gray return to action when they host Hampton on Saturday, February 4 with a 2 p.m. tip-off at the Hytche Center.
