ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Greg Sprink scored 24 points and Navy beat Maryland-Eastern Shore 82-59 Tuesday.
Trey Stanton added 15 points for the Mids (4-1), who are off to their best start since 1998-1999 when they opened the season 6-1. Navy shot 52.8 percent and made 17 of 19 free throws.
UMES shot 34 percent and went 12 minutes without a field goal in the first half. Ed Tyson tied his career-high and led UMES with 21 points. He scored nine of the Hawks' first 13 points. Antonio McMillion added 16 points and Corey Brown 11 points for the Hawks (0-2).
Sprink made 9 of 13 shots from the field with four 3-pointers and led the Mids with a game-high 7 rebounds.
After Tyson scored to put UMES up 11-10 at 13:49, Navy went on an 18-4 run to take a 28-15 lead at the three-minute mark. The Hawks went more than eight minutes without a score as Navy scored 12 in a row. UMES also went 12 minutes between field goals in the half, a drought which lasted from 13:49 to 1:50.
Sprink closed the half with one of six first-half Navy three-pointers as the Mids led 40-23. The Mids shot 57.1 percent (15 of 27) in the first half while the Hawks made just 7 of 25 (28 percent) for the -half. A trio of three-pointers closed the gap to 59-45 with 7:30 left but Navy outscored UMES 23-14 the rest of the way.
