UMES SWEEPS SAVANNAH STATE IN NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

Savannah, Ga. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team swept Savannah State University (25-16) today in a non-conference doubleheader at Tiger Stadium. The Fighting Hawks took both games from the Tigers 4-3. Anthony Jackson led the way for UMES going 4-for-7 in the twinbill including a double, while plating a run, recording two RBI and a stolen base.

Freshman Mike Roberts (2-2) grabbed the win for the Hawks in game one pitching two and two-thirds innings, walking one and striking out three.

The Hawks (11-26-1, 5-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Bernie Stratchko led off the inning with a single to left field. Ronald Quick reached on a fielders' choice as Stratchko was called out at second. Jackson followed with a single to right field advancing Quick to second. Morgan Schirmer walked to load the bases. With two outs, Gaines would walk advancing Schirmer and Jackson, while plating Quick for the RBI. A single to the shortstop by Maher would plate Jackson. Greg Cathell would strike out looking to end the inning.

UMES would hold Savannah run less for the next three innings. In the bottom of the fifth the Tigers would plate a run on two hits.

With the score 2-1, the Hawks would bring in Roberts for James Walls, who previously took the mound for starter Daniel Sterling. Savannah would battle back in the top of the seventh scoring two runs on one hit.

In a last attempt for a win and down one in the top of the ninth, Pete Mayta led off with a single to right field. He would then advance to second on a wild pitch. Gaines would triple to right center plating Mayta to receive the RBI. A single down right field line by Maher would score Gaines. Cathell would groundout to the shortstop for the last out.

In their final at bat and down 4-3, the Tigers couldn't pull it together as Roberts would strike out the first two batters and force a ground out to end the game.

Javier Fiallo (6-5) would take the loss for Savannah pitching one and two-thirds innings giving up three hits and two runs, all earned, while striking out two and walking none.

In game two, UMES jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Maher reached on a bunt single with one out. Cathell would follow with a single to centerfield that would plate Maher and advance him to third on a throwing error from the centerfielder. Hoban would take a hit and advance to third on a throwing error by pitcher John Keene, scoring Cathell. A walk from Stratchko and a double from Jackson would plate two more runs for the Hawks.

The Tigers would answer back in the bottom of the third as they would score two runs on three hits. They would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on one hit and one Hawk error.

Ken Richardson (2-2) scattered six hits and allowed three runs, two earned, in six and two-thirds innings. He walked four and struck out one to grab the win for UMES.

Roberts (2-2) earned his fourth save of the season for the maroon and gray.

Keene (4-5) recorded the loss for Savannah State as he pitched three innings allowing four runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one.

Catcher Chad Sumpter led the way for the Tigers as he went 3-for-6 on the day, plating two runs and recording an RBI.

These two teams will face-off again at Tiger Stadium tomorrow for game three of the series starting at 1:00 pm.
