PRINCESS ANNE, MD - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) head volleyball head coach Alex Temkin announced the team's 2006 schedule on Wednesday. The Lady Hawks will compete in four tournaments, two hosted by UMES, and battle non-league teams from the Big East, Patriot, and Atlantic-10 Conferences.
Of the Lady Hawks' 32 regular-season matches this fall, 14 will be played at the Hytche Athletic Center. Included in the home slate are non-conference decisions against local rival George Washington (Oct. 27) and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member Canisius (Aug. 27).
UMES opens the season when they host the Kick Off Classic on Aug. 25-26. The maroon and gray face off against Norfolk State in a non-conference contest on Aug. 25 before battling Quinnipiac and Wofford on day two of the tournament.
On Sept. 1-2, the Lady Hawks begin play at the La Salle Invitational where the squad will face Rider, Bucknell and the host Explorers. In its third tournament, UMES travels to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for the Marist Invitational on Sept. 8-9. The maroon and gray will battle the host Red Foxes, Alabama State and Coppin State in a non-league decision. The Lady Hawks conclude tournament action when they host the Comfort Inn Classic on Sept. 29-30 where the team takes on Big-East member Providence and a pair of Northeast Conference (NEC) squads in Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis (PA).
The maroon and gray begins Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play against Hampton and Howard at the Hytche Center on Sept. 12 and 19, respectively. The Lady Hawks also host the Eagles of Coppin State on Sept. 26.
UMES hits the road for league decisions against Delaware State (Sept. 17) and Morgan State (Oct. 3). The maroon and gray takes on the league's southern members in the annual MEAC Roundup, hosted by South Carolina State, on Oct. 13-15 before facing off with the Lady Pirates in a non-conference road match on Oct. 15. The Lady Hawks host the Lady Hornets and Lady Bears in non-league decisions on Nov. 7 and 9, respectively.
Non-MEAC road contests pits UMES against American on Oct. 6, Wagner on Nov. 3 and New Jersey Institute of Technology on Nov. 4. The Lady Hawks host future conference member Winston-Salem in its final regular season contest on Nov. 10.
