WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team defeated Winston-Salem State (WSSU) 62-49 to sweep the season series with the Rams.
April McBride had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Hawks (6-10). Jelila Abdul-Bassit added 19 points off the bench while Kristi Veltkamp chipped in with 10. McBride had four steals on the defensive end while Jasmine Speed added a game-high five steals.
Kadina Baldwin's 12 points led WSSU (4-17). Lavontay Johnson and Keoshia Worthy added 10 points each.
The Lady Hawks took a 10-point lead at 13:12 in the first period. The Lady Rams answered with an 18-7 run to end the stanza. Richea Harris hit a trey as time expired to give WSSU the 29-28 lead at the break.
The Hawks shot 44% from the field in the first half and connected on 43% of their shots from beyond the arc (3-for-7). UMES held Winston-Salem to 30% field goal shooting and outscored the Lady Rams 14-4 in the paint. Abdul-Bassit had nine points in seven minutes to pace the Hawks while Johnson's eight points led WSSU.
UMES took another 10-point lead in the second half at 48-38, but the Rams answered with a 9-0 run, capped by a trey by Worthy to close within one point of the lead with 4:22 remaining.
The Hawks went on to outscore Winston-Salem 14-2 over the final four minutes. UMES made 7-of-9 from the charity stripe in the final 1:30 to seal the 13-point win.
The maroon and gray return home for a MEAC contest against Delaware State on January 15 at 2:00 pm.
