PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dropped Delaware State (DSU), 45-32 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) decision Monday afternoon at the Hytche Center. With the win, UMES improved to 7-10 (3-2 MEAC) while picking up its third consecutive win.
Freshman April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) earned her third double-double of the season with 18 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Danielle Cooper (New York, N.Y./Manhattan College) dished out a game-high five assists while Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich./Lansing Home School) swatted a game-high three shots on the defensive end.
Katreem Palmer's 11 points paced the Lady Hornets (6-9, 2-3 MEAC).
DSU made 18% of their field goals (12-for-66) and connected on just 1-of-18 from 3-point range (6%). UMES, meanwhile, did not shoot particularly well but managed to hit 35% of their shots (15-for-43). The Lady Hawks also held a 52-36 rebound advantage but turned the ball over 30 times compared to 13 by Delaware State.
The maroon and gray never trailed and took a 10-point lead at 8:55 in the first half when Veltkamp's lay-up put the Hawks up 17-7. DSU, who made just five field goals in the period, went into the break with a nine-point deficit, trailing 23-14.
UMES pushed the lead back into double-digits in the second half and took a 14-point lead, their largest of the night, late in the game when a McBride lay-up gave the Hawks a 43-29 advantage. The Hornets would get no closer than 13 points after that.
The maroon and gray will next face off with Florida A&M on Saturday, January 20 in a 4:00pm game on ESPNU at the Hytche Center.
