Jan. 29, 2007

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Coppin State University (CSU) got 18 points from Shalamar Oakley and 15 from Rashida Suber and the Lady Eagles (14-6, 9-0 MEAC) cruised past the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) by a score of 77-47 Monday night in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action.

The game never appeared close as CSU shot an amazing 64 percent from the field in the first half and cooled off only a little finishing the game shooting 56 percent. All twelve players who were dressed played and ten of them scored. Tanezia Harden was the other Lady Eagles in double figures with 12 points.

In contrast no player scored in double figures for UMES while 12 players played and 11 scored. April McBride led the Lady Hawks in scoring with nine while coming a point shy of a double double, leading all rebounders with 12. No other Hawk scored more than six points.

Harden and Sutton led CSU with six boards each.

UMES didn't play poor offense, shooting 32 percent from the floor. It was their defense and taking care of the ball as Coppin got lay-up after lay-up on the break and forced many UMES turnovers. The 16 Lady Hawk miscues led to 29 points for CSU, essentially the difference in the game. That showed, as Coppin also dominated the points in the paint, 44-20. The only category that UMES led was bench points, getting 24 points from reserves to Coppin's 18.

"I am very embarrassed by the way we played tonight, we didn't play hard enough or smart enough to play with the best team in the league. It will never happen again," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor.

Coppin jumped out to a 6-0 lead and quickly ran it to 15 with six minutes to play. The lead ballooned to as many as 36 in the second half with just two minutes to play. UMES then got a three pointer from Jelila Abdul-Bassit, a free throw by Ashley Hill and a lay-in at the buzzer from McBride. That was only the second time UMES scored consecutive buckets in the game.

The Lady Hawks now prepare for North Carolina A & T on Saturday, January 29th, a team that topped UMES in Greensboro 74-59 on January 6th. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 pm tip-off.
