HAMPTON, VA. - Jade Jones poured in a career-high 18 points to lead the Lady Pirates over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, 76-41.
In the first half, the Lady Hawks (11-19, 7-10 MEAC) came out and scored the games first two points thanks to a an early foul by Rachel Butler that sent April McBride to the line for two. However, this would be the only time UMES saw the lead as back-to-back jumpers by guards Artavia Burns and Stephanie James triggered a 30-12 run by the Lady Pirates giving Hampton (15-12, 11-7 MEAC) an 18-point lead with six minutes left in the half. The Lady Pirate defense limited the Lady Hawks to just 10 points during the first 12 minutes of play. Hampton took a 34-21 lead into locker room at halftime.
During the first half of play Hampton converted 18 UMES turnovers into nine points and produced 16 bench points while the Lady Hawks received eight points from their reserves. Burns was the leading scorer at the break with 10 points.
The second half mirrored the first as the Lady Pirates opened the second half with a 23-8. Jones first career three-pointer at the one minute mark extended the blue and white lead to 35 (74-39.
The HU frontcourt once again proved to be too much for their opponent as the Pirates outscored UMES in the paint 38-18 and out-rebounded the Hawks 48-29.
Jones registered 18 points and six rebounds to lead Hampton as every player on the roster scored. Burns and sophomore Shahara Johnson added 10 points each. Johnson also led HU on the glass with seven boards.
The Lady Hawks were led by guard Candyce Jeter's nine points and forward April McBride with a game-high nine rebounds.
UMES returns to action on Saturday with a regular season finale against Howard at 2pm.
