CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Hawk seniors led the way on Sunday as James Walls, Justin Hoban and Kevin Hillenburg each went 2-3 in game one while Eric Gaines went 4-5 in game two, but it was not enough to lift visiting Maryland Eastern Shore over Boston College. The Eagles downed UMES, 12-5 and 12-3, respectively, to complete a three-game sweep of the Hawks.
As a team, the Eagles (24-25) powered a .344 team batting average bolstered by a 3.38 ERA in the doubleheader, culminating into a .330 offensive output and 2.88 ERA over the three-game series.
In game one, BC's Terry Doyle allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on six hits in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win. Mike Roberts picked up the loss for UMES (9-43) after giving up nine earned runs on 11 hits.
Walls added two runs to go along with his 2-3 outing while Hoban crossed the plate for a run to go along with two RBI. The senior from Selbyville, Delaware also picked up his first home run of the year when he smacked one over left field in the fifth to plate him and Walls.
In game two, Nate Jeanes earned the win for Boston College after allowing one run on six hits in 6.0 innings of work, fanning two and walking none. Carl Huber picked up the loss for the Hawks after giving up nine runs, all earned, on three hits.
Gaines went 4-for-5 in the second game while Walls picked up two hits for a 2-3 outing. Hoban, Hillenburg, Josh Dean, Joel Gonzalez and Tyler Winch each boasted a hit for the maroon and gray.
UMES returns to action on Thursday, May 17 when they face defending MEAC Champs Bethune-Cookman in the first round of the conference tournament at 10:00am in Norfolk, Va.
