EASTON, Pa. - After playing inspired volleyball against Lafayette, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) made a statement in the region with a 3-1 win over perennial power George Washington (GW), a team used to making the NCAA Tournament. The Hawks picked up their second win on the day and improved to 4-3 while GW fell to 5-5.
UMES controlled the match right away, posting a 30-23 and 30-27 win in games one and two respectively. The Colonials rebounded to take game three 30-21 but the Hawks remembered Fairleigh Dickinson from a day earlier and wouldn't let the match slip away, posting a 30-27 win in game four, taking the match.
Caylin Woodward would lead the Hawk attack, posting 14 kills, a match high, while Whitney Johnson had 11 kills and Holiday Eller 10. Leah Amundson earned some national recognition with 32 digs while Woodward and Christina Estebane' both earned a rare feat, triple doubles. Woodward tallied ten assists and 22 digs to go along with her kills while Estebane' had ten kills, 32 assists and 16 digs.
Adora Luster pitched in with four kills and three aces.
GW only had one player, Leah Hill post double digit kills, with ten. Maggie Wright had 14 digs and Jess Buche had 29 assists.
The Hawks dominated the match using all ten players on the roster while the Colonials played 11 players, trying to find the right combination. They never did. Statistically UMES was out blocked and hit a tad bit lower (.110 to .106) but the chemistry seemed to pay off in the big win for the Hawks.
UMES hopes to keep the momentum going when they travel to Morgan State on Friday, September 14th for their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match.
