WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks used a dominant low post effort to run past Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) 82-46 on Saturday afternoon in the LJVM Coliseum.
UMES (7-6) jumped out to a 19-2 lead with 11:12 remaining in the first half on a Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich/Lansing Home School) free throw. Freshmen Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science and Math) scored an amazing 14 points during that stretch and would finish with 20 points in the first half.
WSSU (0-11) scored their first field goal of the game on a Corbin Bradford lay-in with 10:38 left in the first half but the Lady Hawks would not let up and took their largest lead of the half on a Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa./National Christian Academy) free-throw with just under two minutes to go.
Jessica Ayilola (Brooklyn, N.Y./Robert Morris University) capped off the first 20 minutes with a lay-in at the buzzer to give UMES a 46-17 lead going into the break. The Lady Hawks shot 51.4 percent in the first half, while holding WSSU to 22.2 percent on just six field goals.
Parker would open up the scoring in the second half with a jumper but would get into foul trouble early on and would finish one rebound shy of a double-double as with a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds on 10-of-14 shooting from the field in just 16 minutes of action.
The Lady Hawks would take their biggest lead of the game on a Queenique Tyler (Ft.Washington, Md./Potomac H.S.) three-pointer to make it 77-37 with 5:27 remaining in the game, however; WSSU would close out the game on a 13-6 run as UMES Head Coach Fred Batchelor would empty the bench.
All but two Lady Hawks would score in the game, while four finished in double figures. Parker led the way followed by April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) who added 12 points to go along with a game-high four steals, while Ayilola and Reid finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Lady Rams were led by Bradford with 16 points and she was joined by teammate Talneshia Kee who added 15 as they combined for 67 percent of the total offense.
UMES finished 31-of-63 from the field for 49.2 percent, while holding WSSU to just 15 field goals on 22.1 percent shooting. They also flexed their muscle down low as they out rebounded the Lady Rams, 57-28, and outscored them in the paint, 46-14. In addition, the Lady Hawks dished out 13 more assists, 18-5, and had six more steals, 9-3, than their opposition.
