Box Score
HAMPTON, Va. - An early bird start did not seem to faze the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks Softball team as they matched Morgan State University (MSU) with seven hits but could not translate them into scores in a 7-0 loss in the first game of the Hampton Lady Pirates Softball Tournament on Friday at Briarfield Park.
UMES who dropped to 4-11 overall got hits from six of their nine players, including two from Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore./Gresham H.S.), but could not take advantage as they left nine on base.
Freshman pitcher Bonnie Heineken (North Pole, Alaska/North Pole H.S.) who got the start against one of the MEAC's better teams had a solid outing. Heineken went the distance and gave up five earned runs on seven hits while tossing four strikeouts.
Porsche Boddicker got the complete game win for the Lady Bears, allowing no runs and striking out three.
The top of the order (1-3) for MSU sparked their offense. Leadoff batter Dominisha Britton went 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs, including a solo homer in the sixth. Ashley Vasquez added two hits, RBIs, and runs each to go along with a homerun, while Tamra Griffin knocked in two runs as well.
MSU struck first with a Griffin single that brought in Britton and Vasquez to make it 2-0 heading into the second.
Truttman and Kaminine Jeeuth (Brooklyn, N.Y./Monroe College) both singled in the second to put the Lady Hawks in scoring position, but no damage was done as Boddicker retired the remaining two batters.
The Lady Bears added three more runs in the second with Britton getting things started as she brought one home on a ground out to second base. Vasquez proceeded with a two-out two-run homerun that made it 5-0 in favor of MSU.
Things started to look up for UMES as the first two batters drew walks to start the third inning but the Lady Hawks could not get anything out of it as they left them stranded.
UMES' most promising inning came in the top of the sixth with Jaleesa Lewis (Milford, Del./Milford H.S.) singling to open up the inning. Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Streetsville Secondary School) would follow with a walk. Truttman then singled on the next at-bat but Lewis was called out at third because of interference. The hitting continued with a Heineken single which saw Saunders get called out at home on the scoring attempt.
Britton would tack on two more runs, including an RBI single in the fourth and a solo homer in the sixth.
The Lady Hawks continue the tournament later today with a game against host Hampton starting at 11:00 a.m.
