NORFOLK, Va. - On average, a foul was committed every 42 seconds in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball battle against Norfolk State University (NSU). The Lady Hawks (5-9) outlasted NSU 88-76 to bring their record to 2-2 in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) had a career-high 23 points to lead the Lady Hawks. April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) grabbed her third double-double of the season with 22 points and 12 rebounds. This marks the fourth time in two season that two Lady Hawks have posted 20 plus points in the same game.
UMES led the entire contest. Freshman Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.), in her first start in eight games, hit a three to put the Lady Hawks up by five 3:21 seconds into play. NSU responded with a layup before UMES held the Spartans scoreless for the next 2:42.
Freshman Marquilla Evans broke NSU's silence by hitting a jumper with 14:21 on the clock to bring the Spartans back to within five. Whitney Long would follow with a layup to drop the deficit to three; the closest NSU would be to the Lady Hawks for the rest of the night. UMES led by as much as 17 in the win.
Evans led the Spartans with a game-high 26 points. Tashawna Higgins had 15 points and Long finished with 14.
The Lady Hawks will be heading to Farmville, Va. to close out their three game road trip against Longwood University on January 21.
