Jan. 19, 2009

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) and senior Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Jan. 18.

It is the third consecutive week Pitt, of the men's basketball team, has been given the honor.

Pitt helped the Hawks to a 1-1 week. He averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 points in a 66-63 home win over South Carolina State (Jan. 12) and a 76-61 road loss at North Carolina A&T (Jan. 17). Pitt shot a combined 11-for-26 from the field (42.3 percent).

The Hawks (3-10, 1-2 MEAC) play the second of a three-game road trip Monday at 8 p.m., facing Norfolk State.

James, of the women's indoor track and field team, won the 800 meters at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., Jan.17. She also had a hand in UMES' victory in the 4x400-meter relay, and was one of three Lady Hawks to win individual events at the meet.

Both UMES men's and women's track and field teams are back in action Jan. 23 at the Great Dane Classic.
