JOHNSON, KIPROTICH NAMED UMES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) and junior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Oct. 18.

Johnson, an outside hitter on the women's volleyball team, helped lead the Hawks to a 2-0 week. UMES defeated Hampton (Friday) and Coppin State (Sunday) by sweeps to remain atop the MEAC Northern Division standings.

Johnson recorded 25 kills, five digs, three aces and a .391 hitting percentage for the week. Her best individual performance came against the Lady Pirates with a team-leading 14 kills along with three aces, two digs and a .385 hitting percentage.

UMES (15-6, 4-0 MEAC) is next at Howard Friday (Oct. 23) at 7 p.m.

Kiprotich, of the men's cross-country team, was the Hawks' top finisher at the Blue and Gold Meet hosted by Delaware. He was 19th in a time of 26:50.63. UMES was sixth overall with 201 points.

UMES hosts the MEAC Championships Oct.17 at 10 a.m.
