PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team continues MEAC play this weekend when the Hawks travel to Dover, Del., to take on Delaware State Sunday at Memorial Hall.
UMES comes into its 3 p.m. match with the Hornets at 12-6 on the season after defeating Morgan State, 3-0, at Hill Field House on Tuesday in the conference opener for both teams. The Hawks have won eight straight matches against the Hornets dating back to a 3-0 loss on the road Oct. 28, 2005.
DSU is 10-10 on the year and is coming off of a five-set victory over Lehigh on Tuesday.
UMES leads the conference in hitting percentage (.261), assists per game (11.85) and kills per game (12.73) while Delaware State is tops in opponent hitting percentage (.167), blocks per game (1.86) and digs per game (14.59).
Individually, senior Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md.) is third in the conference with a .308 hitting percentage and sophomore Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) is also third in kills per game at 3.30. freshman Bella Jade Romero (Arlington, Texas) is averaging 10.31 assists per game and senior Caylin Woodward (Garden Grove, Calif.) sixth in the league in digs per game at 3.10.
The Hornets are led by Cassandra Joyner who is averaging 3.09 kills per set with a .276 hitting percentage. Martina Ferrari leads the team in digs at 3.86 per game while Sarah Wheatcroft is averaging 6.04 assists per game.
The Hawks and Hornets haven't met yet this this season but UMES won the Delaware State Invitational Sept. 11-12 in Dover defeating Navy, La Salle and Norfolk State.
