PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) scored a game-high 23 points, 14 in the second half, and pulled down five rebounds as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team defeated Salisbury University, 82-56, in exhibition action at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Tuesday.
Sanders was 9-of-16 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range to lead the Hawks. Junior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) and senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) also finished in double figures with 17 and 10, respectively as all 11 Lady Hawks to see action scored. McBride led UMES with six boards, four on the offensive glass. Morton also chipped in with a game-high eight steals while the Lady Hawks forced 38 turnovers.
Salisbury got a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds from Kylie Hall and Glen Charlton and Chante' McKinney also had double digits with 13 and 11 points.
The Division III Sea Gulls hung around long enough to give UMES a scare as the Lady Hawks' neighbors from down Route 13 held a 34-31 halftime lead while shooting 65 percent (13-for-20). SU's largest lead, 18-11, came at the 12:24 mark on a jumper by McKinney.
Sanders gave UMES the lead back in with 6:08 left on a jumper for a 26-25 advantage before Salisbury closed the half on a 9-5 run.
The second half was a different story as UMES outscored SU, 51-22, to take control of the game Morton hit a pair of free throws a minute into the second stanza to give the Lady Hawks the lead for good at 35-34.
UMES held the Sea Gulls scoreless for just over two minutes to start the half and the hosts took their first double-digit edge with 15:04 to play on a Morton layup. Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) spurred a 9-0 run with four points over a two-and-a-half minute stretch to put UMES up, 58-39, with 11:51 left and they cruised to the win from there.
UMES shot 19-for-38 (50 percent) in the second half and 30-of-76 (39.5) for the game while SU cooled off to 22-of-43 overall for a 51.2 clip.
UMES opens the regular season Sunday, Nov. 15 on the road at UMBC at 1 p.m.
