RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Freshman Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) led all players with 22 points and grabbed six rebounds and senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) picked up a double-double but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team fell, 88-58, to Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium Sunday.

Sanders shot 7-of-18 from the floor, including 4-of-10 from 3-point range, and McBride added 11 points and 11 rebounds for UMES (0-2). Manhattan, which was 31-for-61 from the field (50.8 percent), improved to 2-1.

Junior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) chipped in with seven points, five boards two assists and a steal for the Lady Hawks. Classmate Latoya Buckner (Washington, D.C.) contributed six points and five rebounds.

Four Lady Jaspers scored in double digits led by Michelle Pacheco with 21 points and eight assists. Lindsey Loutsenhizer had 16 points and eight rebounds as well.

The Lady Hawks struggled shooting the ball for the second straight game to open the season, connecting on just 30.3 percent (20-of-66) of their attempts for the game.

Manhattan held UMES without a basket for the first 2:37 of the game before Sanders hit a driving layup and cut the deficit to nine at 11-2. Junior Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) knocked down a three to bring her team with eight at 13-5 with 15:38 to play in the half. That was the closest UMES got to the lead the rest of the day.

Manhattan began a 17-8 run to create distance for itself over the next six-and-a-half minutes. Alyssa Herrington had six of her 11 points on a pair of 3-pointers in the stretch.

Manhattan led, 55-36, at the half.

Sanders tallied a game-high 19 points in the opening 20 minutes to keep the Lady Hawks within striking distance at the half despite the 19-point margin. She was 6-of-11 from the floor, helping UMES to 32.4 percent as a team (12-of-37). The Lady Jaspers were on fire in the first, shooting 19-for-30, a 63.3 percent clip.

Freshman Shaneva Hayward (Los Angeles, Calif.) sank a jumper on the first possession of the second half to make it 55-38, but Nadia Peters converted a layup for a 75-51 advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Alicia Marculitis gave Manhattan its biggest lead of the game, 87-55, with 2:54 left on a fast-break jumper in the paint and the Lady Jaspers cruised to the victory.

Manhattan won the battle of the boards, 47-42, and converted 19 UMES turnovers into 18 points. Conversely, the Lady Hawks had 12 points on 15 Manhattan miscues.

UMES travels to Brooklyn, N.Y. Tuesday (Nov. 24) to play Long Island at 5 p.m.
