Feb. 17, 2009

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - All 12 players on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team saw time on the court as the Lady Hawks rolled over Norfolk State University (NSU) 95-64 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) competition Monday night. UMES (11-12, 7-5 MEAC) shot over 80-percent from the free throw line and finished with four players in double digits.

It was a night for giving. Wearing pink wrist and headbands for breast cancer awareness, the Lady Hawks dished out a season-high 21 assists as a team.

Juniors April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) tied with freshman Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.), who finished with a career-high 16 points, leading UMES. McBride added a game-high 15 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. Junior Jasmine Speed (McDonough, Ga.) had a season-high 10 points to close out the Lady Hawks in double-digits.

UMES never trailed in the contest. The Lady Hawks went up by 31 at the half after Agbasi finished off a three point play at the foul line and Kanzes Battin (Wilmington, Del.) hit a layup with 33 seconds on the clock to close out scoring.

The Lady Hawks led by as much as 41 points before NSU got hot from beyond the arc. Tiora Hackley started the rally for the Lady Spartans with a three at 10:49. NSU held the Lady Hawks without a field goal for over four minutes when Whitney Long hit a long three for NSU to put the score at 72-39 with 8:45 to play and Hackley hit her second three of the day with 8:16 on the clock to pull NSU to within 31.

Tyche' Mozie (Washington, D.C) broke the drought with a layup but back to back threes by Raychele Payne helped put NSU at their smallest margin of the half. The Lady Spartans would get as close as 76-53 with just under five minutes left in the game before UMES pulled the lead back out to the final 31 point margin.

The Lady Spartans finished a perfect 7-for-7 from 3-point range in the second half.

NSU was led by Long, who finished with a game-high 17 points. Payne had 12 points, shooting 2-for-3 from 3-point range, and Marquilla Evans ended the contest with 10 points, going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

UMES will travel down to Florida next to face off against Florida A&M on February 21. The Lady Hawks will tipoff at 2 p.m. Fans can still hear all about their favorite team by listening to the play-by-play on umeshawks.com.
