May 6, 2009

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior right hander Russel Deutschmann (Baden Ontario) threw seven and one-third innings and allowed three runs to help the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team to an 8-3 win over Temple in non-conference action at Hawks Stadium on Wednesday.

The win snapped a nine-game losing skid for the Hawks (12-39), who close the regular season with a three-game set this weekend against North Carolina Central at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

"It's great to end the season on a high note and win our final home game of the season," said UMES head coach Will Gardner. "We were able to get some timely hits and take advantage of Temple's miscues. Hopefully we will be able to use this to gain momentum heading into the North Carolina Central series and the MEAC Tournament next week."

After surrendering a run in the top of the first, the Hawks reeled off eight unanswered to hold an 8-1 lead through seven innings. The Hawks were outhit, 12-8, but benefited from five Temple errors to tally four unearned runs.

Sophomore first baseman Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlemhem, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with his team-leading 11th double and a two-RBI triple to go along with three run scored. He also added a sacrifice fly. Sophomore tri-captain Remo Orsini (Elkton, Md.) also scored twice while freshman catcher Ben Vasko (San Diego, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Deutchmann (2-8) was steady all day. He struck out two, walked two and stranded eight Temple baserunners before freshman lefty John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) tossed the final inning and two thirds in hitless fashion to nail down the victory.

Down, 1-0, after the top of the first, the Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Josh Dunham (Des Moines, Iowa) led things off with a base hit up the middle and Orsini dropped down a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Chaikowsky then rifled a ball to the left-center field gap for a triple, scoring two and came around himself to make it 3-1 when Temple left fielder Jaime Abercrombie overthrew the third baseman.

UMES pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third. Orsini and Chaikowsky were plunked by Owls' starter Tyler Horst on consecutive 1-0 counts with no one out. Following a sacrifice bunt moving then to second and third, TU shortstop airmailed the first baseman, allowing Orsini to cross the plate.

Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) made it a four run advantage with a sacrifice fly to center to score Chaikowsky.

UMES added two more in the fifth when Chaikowsky scored on the third Temple error of the day and Vasko ripped a double down the left-field line to bring in Armstrong from second, which sent Horst (1-4) to the showers in favor of Mike Click.

Horst lasted four and two thirds giving up six hits and three earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts.

UMES extended the lead to seven in the six when Tyler Love (Palmyra, Pa.) scored on Chaikowsky's sacrifice fly to right. Love doubled to start the inning and moved to third on of third baseman Tony Jusino's three errors.

Temple (17-27) got two back in the eighth to get to within five when Kyle Obal collected an RBI double and Lenny DelGrippo lifted a run-scoring fly to center. The Owls, though got no closer.

Click went three and a third innings in relief and allowing two hits and a run. He also struck out three and walked two.

Jusino was 3-for-4 with a run and Abercrombie was 3-for-5 for Temple.
