PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led all players with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and junior Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) recorded her second career double-double as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team cruised to a 65-38 win over Winston-Salem State at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday.
Parker tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds while Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) also finished in double figures with 13 points to help the Lady Hawks (4-7) to their second straight win. Winston-Salem State fell to 2-13 on the season, suffering its 11th consecutive defeat.
UMES came out of the gates strong, shooting a blazing 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field in the first half and scored 11 of the game's first 13 points in 4:05 to take an 11-point lead. McBride tallied seven in the run which set the tone for the night, as the Lady Hawks never trailed.
Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) nailed a 3-pointer at the 11:04 mark to grow the lead to 17 at 23-6. The UMES offense kept coming as the Lady Hawks used another 11-point spurt to extend their advantage to 34-12 with 4:32 to play when Parker converted on a fast-break layup off a pass from Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.).
UMES took a 39-17 bulge into the break. The Lady Hawks dominated inside in the opening 20 minutes, outscoring the Lady Rams in the paint, 22-8. UMES also turned nine WSSU turnovers in 13 points, and held the visitors to just 24.1 percent from the floor.
Winston-Salem State only got as close as 21 points in the second half as Vontisha Woods knocked down a pair of free throws over five minutes into the half to cut the deficit to 43-22. Woods (11 points) and MaLisa Bumpus (10) were the only Lady Rams to score in double digits.
From there, the Lady Hawks coasted the victory. McBride gave her team its largest lead on the game at 57-29, hitting a jump shot from a feed by Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) with 6:46 left. Morton registered a game-high seven assists and chipped in with seven rebounds.
UMES cooled off from the field in the second stanza but was still able to post a solid 43.6 percent mark on 24-of-55 from the floor. They also played tough defense to the end, limiting WSSU to just 23.1 percent (12-for-52) for the game.
UMES was also strong on the boards, outrebounding Winston-Salem State, 50-19. It marked the first time Feb. 9, 2008 (a 105-87 home win over Howard) a UMES team had won the battle of the boards by at least 15.
UMES is back in action Saturday, Jan. 16 at Florida A&M at 5:30.
