UMES FALLS TO HOWARD, 55-51, SATURDAY

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Howard's Saadia Doyle and Zykia Brown combined for 54 points as the Lady Bison topped the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team 55-51 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.

Doyle tallied a game-high 32 points on 8-of-15 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Brown had 22, three boards and three steals. The Lady Bison Improved 9-10 and 5-3 in the MEAC with the win. UMES was led by freshman Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) with 17 points. Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Hawks fell to 7-10 (4-3).

Junior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) and sophomore Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) each chipped in with seven points. Morton had three assists and Agbasi had a game-high four blocks.

UMES held 21-18 halftime lead before Howard exploded for 37 points in the final 20 minutes, 36 of which came from the pair of Doyle and Brown. The only other player to score for HU in the game was Julee' O'Neal, who hit a free throw with 16:57 to play to get her team back within three, 25-22.

Agbasi gave UMES its biggest lead of the day at 33-27 at the 14:39 when she completed a three-point play. From there, Howard engineered an 11-4 run to take its first lead of the second half with 9:54 remaining. Doyle recorded eight in the spurt, including a pair of free throws for the lead.

McBride later knotted things at 40-all on a 3-pointer with 8:02 left and quickly knocked down another one at the 6:10 mark to give UMES what amounted to its second-to-last lead of the game at 43-42. Brown hit a three of her own on the next trip down the floor and Morton responded with yet another one from long range for a 46-45 advantage with 5:21 left.

Howard put the game away, closing with a 10-5 stretch for the win. UMES had chances in the final minute but couldn't convert. Down 53-50 with 17 seconds left, Cook hit 1-of-2 free throws to get within two but down then did the same before Morton's 3-point attempt with seven seconds left rimmed out.

Howard scored the first six points of the game in 5:01 but UMES battled back with an 11-2 run. Freshman Latoya Buckner (Washington, D.C.) gave the Lady Hawks their first lead at 11-8 with a three midway through the half. HU came back with five consecutive points once again for a 14-11 edge at 7:38 before UMES closed the half with the three-point lead.

UMES shot 37.2 percent (16-for-43) from the floor while Howard was 30.8 percent from the field (16-of-52). The Lady Bison won the battle of the boards, 39-36, and forced 21 turnovers. Howard had 13 miscues.

UMES next hosts Hampton Monday at 5:30 p.m.
