VAITAI, MELEK NAMED UMES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) and sophomore Basil Melek have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the period ending Oct. 18.

Vaitai helped the women's volleyball team to straight-set victories over Hampton and Coppin State at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Friday and Sunday, extending its winning streak to nine. She tallied 15 kills in each match (5.00 per game). She also had six digs and one service ace on the weekend.

UMES (15-9, 4-0 MEAC) celebrates Senior Day this Friday Oct. 22 against Howard at 7 p.m.

Melek finished fourth in the eight kilometer men's race at the Delaware Blue and Gold Invitational in Newark, Del. He ran the White Clay State Park course in 26:16.44 to help the Hawks to a third-place team finish with 94 points.

UMES is off until hosting the MEAC Championship on Oct. 30.
