HAWK-TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF HAWK ATHLETICS

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The fall and winter athletic seasons are about to clash as bowling competed well against top competition, volleyball completed their regular season and men's and women's basketball get set to take the court for the first time.

BOWLING
Hawks bowling had a strong showing in the New Jersey Jamboree, finishing second in the field of 16, including seven of the top-10 preseason teams, ending only behind tournament host Fairleigh Dickinson. UMES ended with a 9-4 record in the event, including going 4-1 in head-to-head matches and 5-3 in Baker play.

After the tournament, UMES stands at 11-4 overall, including going 5-1 in head-to-head results.

Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill.) averaged a 235.6 score in five games played, and MEAC Preseason Player of the Year Maria Rodriguez (Ibague Tolima, Colombia) recorded an average of 219.4 per contest.

VOLLEYBALL
UMES volleyball split their matches during the week, sweeping Coppin State 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-15) on Friday before falling to Howard in three sets (28-30, 18-25, 16-25) on Sunday.

The Hawks end their regular season with a 19-11 record overall and 8-2 in the MEAC, assuring at minimum a tie at the top of the Northern Division as the team prepares for the conference tournament in two weeks.

Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) combined for 21 kills for the matches. Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.) got 19 kills and six aces during the weekend.

GOLF
The men's golf team finished up the fall season with the Savannah State University Tiger Fall Invitational, placing four in the top-30 and getting seventh place in the nine team field.

After shooting an 88 for his first round, Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) shot the 12th best second round with a 79, the best round for any Hawk in the tournament to finish in 21st place. Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) shot the best for UMES in the first round, getting 82, followed by an 86 on the second round to finish tied for 24th. Kijontray McClay (San Diego, Calif.) improved nine strokes on the final round to end at 171 and 26th places. Gregory Raad (Bel Air, Md.) finished at 172 to end tied for 27th place.

UPCOMING WEEK (NOV. 8-14)
Hawks men's basketball begins this week with their home opener at the Hytche Athletic Center as they host Tulane for the first time in school history on Friday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets to the game are $10.

UMES women's basketball also starts this week with two contests. On Tuesday, November 9th, the Hawks host Wesley for an exhibition at 6:00 p.m. The first official game will commence on Sunday, November 14th as UMES hosts UMBC for a 3:00 p.m. matinee in Princess Anne. Tickets for the contest are just $10.

The women's bowling team will head to Washington D.C. as the MEAC Northern Division will compete against each other for the first time this season. UMES will take on conference foes Coppin State, Hampton, Delaware State, Morgan State and tournament host Howard on Saturday, November 13th and Sunday, November 14th at noon.

UMES cross country will head to State College, Pa. as the top runners of the school, including Basil Melek and Peter Sang for the men's side and Cynthia Anais and Eunice Jones for the women's side, will compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. The women's 6K race begins at noon while the men's 10K race will start at 1:15 p.m.
