UMES DROPS SECOND STRAIGHT TO HAMPTON. 64-48

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds but Hampton's Quanneisha Perry led a group of three players in double figures as the Lady Pirates defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 64-48, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday.

Perry, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, posted a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds as Hampton evened its record at 10-10 (6-3 MEAC), handing UMES (7-11, 4-4) its second straight loss and fifth consecutive to HU.

Junior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) was the only other Lady Hawk in double digits with 11 on 5-for-10 shooting. She dished out a game-high five assists and had two rebounds. Sophomore Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with five points and tied her career high with nine boards.

Hampton also got 16 points and three rebounds from Whitney Hill while Melanie Warner had 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-best five steals.

Neither team had more than a five-point lead in the opening 20 minutes. Redshirt sophomore Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) gave UMES a 10-9 advantage with 8:45 gone on a 3-pointer and sophomore Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) added a free throw with 9:33 to play to extend it to a bucket.

A Hill fast-break jumper later put Hampton up, 12-11, at the 8:33 mark. Morton then responded with a transition layup of her own to give UMES its final lead of the game at 13-12 with 6:59 left.

Hampton closed the half with a 14-8 run, taking a 26-21 margin into the locker room. Hill led all players with 10 points at the break.

A McBride free throw in the opening seconds of the second cut the Hampton lead to 26-22 but that was as close as the Lady Hawks got the rest of the night. UMES shot a season-low 12 freebies for the game, connecting on just seven for 58.3 percent.

Hampton score five straight points on a Jenkins three and Perry layup as its lead grew to 31-22 less than two minutes in. Warner then gave the Lady Pirates there first double-digit advantage (35-35) with a free throw at the 12:04 mark. Hampton was 22-of-20 from the line (75.9 percent).

A Morton layup with 11 minutes remaining got UMES within single digits for the last time in the game but the Lady Hawks got no closer as the two teams traded baskets nine minutes. Hampton put the game away at the line in the last two-plus minutes, making 13-of-14 down the stretch for the 16-point victory.

HU shot 45.5 percent in the second half to finish the game 19-of-53 for 35.8 percent. UMES was 33.3 percent, connecting of 19-of 57 shots. UMES had 16 turnovers to Hampton's 13. Hampton also won the battle of the boards, 42-38.

UMES hits the road Saturday, Feb. 6 to play Norfolk State at Echols Hall at 2 p.m.
