VAUGHN, JOHNSON LEAD UMES IN LOSSES TO SAVANNAH STATE

March 20, 2010

Final Stats

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Senior Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) and freshman Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) combined to hit 10-for-14 at the plate but it wasn't enough as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team fell to Savannah State, 13-3 and 3-2, in a doubleheader at Tiger Field Saturday.

The Tigers (6-11) used a nine-run first inning to put the opener out of reach and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth of the second game when pinch runner Kendrick Jones swiped home to complete a double steal.

The Hawks, who outhit SSU in the second game, 8-6, dropped to 0-17 with the sweep. Vaughn was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored, a walk and a pair of stolen bases in the first game and followed that up with another three singles and two steals in the nightcap.

Johnson hit 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and two runs driven in for Game 1 and was 3-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base in the second contest.

Savannah State manufactured a 1-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2. Julius Green, who had reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on an error by Lucas Koenig (Berlin, Md.) at first base and moved third on a passed ball charged to Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.). Kevin Herlihy put the Tigers on the board with an RBI groundout to short.

UMES knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. Johnson shot a one-out single to left and went to second when pitcher Mark Sherrod overthrew first base on a pick-off attempt.

Vaughn singled to left to move Johnson to third and J.J. Corriveau's (Hollywood, Fla.) sacrifice fly tied things up with two outs in the inning. Vaughn then stole second and went to third on a balk but Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) struck out, ending the inning.

SSU took the lead back in the bottom of the inning. Darien Campbell started the frame with a double down the right-field line and scored on a sac fly to right by Dexter Kelley with one man out.

Savannah State extended its advantage with a run in the sixth when Eddie Barkley doubled and was pinch run for by Jones. Jones then moved to third on a flyout and Herlihy walked, putting men on first and second. Using heads-up base running, Herlihy got himself in a rundown long enough for Jones to swipe home and a two-run lead.

UMES scratched together a second run in the seventh when Johnson singled and stole two bases - including home - but Vaughn bounced into a fielder's choice to end the game.

Both starting pitchers went the entire seven innings with Mark Sherrod improving to 2-0 with the win. Sophomore John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss for UMES. Sherrod gave up eight hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and two walks and DesChamps (0-4) scattered six hits and two earned. He fanned four and walked one.

Vaughn led off the first inning of Game 2 with a double to right and stole third. Johnson lifted a fly to center that scored Vaughn for a 1-0 UMES lead.

Savannah State stormed back in the bottom of the first with nine runs on five hits and four errors, two each by sophomore second baseman Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) and freshman pitcher Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.).

Jonathan Ross made it 10-1 with a one-out bomb to left-center field in the fourth. The Hawks put together a two-out rally to cut into the lead in the top of the sixth. Chaikowsky beat out an infield roller to short for a hit and stole second. He moved to third when Chris Arnold's throw sailed into center field. Chaikowsky scored on a throwing error by Bubba Green at short to make it 10-2.

That was as clod as UMES got as SSU tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the eighth for the final margin.

Michael Allegretti (2-2) went eight innings to pick up the win for the Tigers and Haines took his fourth loss of the year in four innings for the Hawks, giving up 10 hits and eight runs. Kelley led SSU at the plate in the doubleheader going 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three steals.

The Teams close the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
