KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) had a game-high-tying nine kills as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's volleyball team swept New Hampshire, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18), in its final match of the Art Carmichael URI Volleyball Invitational at Keaney Gym Saturday.
With the win, UMES (3-7), grabbed its first winning streak of the season after topping Marist, 3-2, Friday. UNH fell in 3-7 in the loss.
"We played well today from the first point throughout the entire match," said UMES head coach Don Metil. "The girls showed a lot of effort as well as execution of the gameplan. It's a big win and a good way to leave the tournament at 2-1."
UMES outhit the Wildcats .200-.118, including holding them to .059 and .037 percentages, in the first and third games, respectively.
The Hawks also got seven kills apiece from freshman Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) and redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Zoe Bowens (Long Beach, Calif.).
The Hawks trailed, 14-11, in the first game as UMES called its first timeout. From there, UMES went on a 10-5 run to take command of the game and forced a UNH timeout at 21-19. UMES nailed down the game on a Wildcats' error.
UMES broke open a tight second game at 15-15, taking its first lead at 17-16 on another error and cruised to a five-point win with a Vaitai kill to go up, 2-0.
The Hawks raced out to a 7-1 lead in the third set and again won the game comfortably by seven.
Sophomore Stephanie Sierra (El Paso, Texas) directed the offense with 23 of the team's 31 assists, Sierra also had a match-best 14 digs for her second double-double of the weekend.
Lauren Laquerre had nine kills to lead UNH.
UMES travels to Navy to play in the Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament Friday and Saturday (Sept. 17-18). The Hawks open facing Howard at 4 p.m. Friday at Wesley Brown Field House.
