VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Kaveingna Lea'Aetoa (Salt Lake City, Utah) was named MEAC Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Lea'Aetoa, a 5-foot-11 middle blocker, led UMES to a 2-1 record at the Kristin Dickmann Memorial Tournament, hosted by Navy. UMES (5-8) defeated Howard, 3-0 and Navy , 3-2, to finish second to Hartford.
Lea'Aetoa was one of two Hawks named to the all-tournament team as she tallied 43 kills (3.31 per game) and a .315 hitting percentage in three matches. She also had 13 total blocks (1.08 per game), seven digs and two aces.
Lea'Aetoa's top single-match effort came in a five-set loss to Hartford, when she registered 17 kills, four total blocks, four digs while hitting .382..
Redshirt senior Samantha Chukwura (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was also named an Other Top Performer by the conference the 5-foot-9 middle blocker had 30 kills, a .368 hitting percentage and 7.5 blocks.
UMES winner of four of its last five matches, travels to Durham, N.C., for the NCCU Volleyball Tournament Sept. 24-25.
