PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore only had one team in action this past week but the volleyball team represented Hawk athletics superbly as the women won the UMES Hawk Invitational at the William P Hytche Center. The golf team, along with the men's and women's cross country teams, was inactive this past week.

VOLLEYBALL

The UMES volleyball team was named champions of the UMES Hawk Invitational as the women went 3-0 this past weekend. The women opened up the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Alabama State University (25-19, 25-13, 25-12) before concluding the tournament two victories over North Carolina Central University (25-16, 25-16, 25-17) and California State University, Bakersfield (25-14, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22). The women lost only one game the entire tournament as Hawks held their opponents to under 20 points in seven of their ten matches.

The Hawks (9-6) were led by the performance of freshman Saitaua Iosia. Her performance helped her garner Most Valuable Player laurels in this past weekend's tournament. For the weekend, the freshman tallied 47 kills, 16 digs and six blocks. Her best performance came against California State University, Bakersfield in the championship game on Saturday night when she ripped a tournament-high 25 kills and made nine digs. Iosia was one of two Hawks that were named to the All-Tournament Team as sophomore Maline Vaitai was included as well. Vaitai finished the tournament with 21 kills and 18 digs while freshman Jessie Vicic contributed with 109 assists, including a 46 assist effort in the championship game against UCSB.

UPCOMING WEEK (Oct. 3-Oct. 10)

The UMES volleyball team opens up its MEAC schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. when the Hawks host Delaware State University at the William P. Hytche Center. The Hawks will then travel to Coppin State University on Friday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m., before traveling to Morgan State University on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m.

The cross country teams return to action on Friday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m., when they participate in the Delaware State Invitational. UMES will make its second trip to Smyrna, Del., as the Hawks swept the Delaware State Open on Sept. 10.

The golf team is idle this week before participating in the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport Colonial Classic in Hopewell Township, Pa., next Monday.
