FRESHMEN SHINE IN UMES DEFEAT AGAINST TOWSON 58-45

TOWSON, Md. - Despite a strong second half led by UMES's freshmen, the Lady Hawks fell to Towson 58-45 on the road. Jessica Long, Shawnee Sweeney and Porsha Barr, three UMES freshmen, were the three leaders in scoring for the team.

UMES (2-6) and Towson (8-2) began the game slow as the two teams registered just four baskets apiece through the first 12 minutes of play.

The defenses of both teams would take over play for the next few minutes before Long buried a three-pointer and Chelsea Sanders converted a jumper to bring UMES' deficit to just one, 18-17 with just under four to play

TU push its lead to 15 points when the Tigers closed the half out on a 14-0 run to make the score 32-17, at intermission.

The Hawks were outrebounded in the half, 27-14, but posted four steals and forced TU into eight turnovers. The Tigers shot 15-for-17 from the line in that period as they took advantage of 13 first-half Hawk fouls.

Towson opened the second with an 8-2 run but the Hawks would bring the score closer with two jumpers and another three-pointer by Long. Sweeney tallied the Hawks' next three baskets but another strong Tiger push moved the UMES deficit to 21 points, 53-32, with just under 10 remaining.

UMES would cut the Towson lead to less than 20 points a few times in the half, the last when Barr hit a jumper in the paint with 4:45 to go. Despite not allowing a basket to Towson in the final nine minutes, the Lady Hawks could not comeback in the contest..

The Hawks were led in the game by Long, who tallied a team-high and personal career high 11 points and five steals. Sweeney and Barr each scored nine points, with the latter adding seven rebounds.

Tanisha McTiller led the Tigers with 14 points, adding four rebounds. Krystal Parnell added 11 points while Nyree Williams had five points and ten rebounds.

UMES returns to action on Saturday, December 17th, when the women travel to Tampa, Fla., to take on the University of South Florida at 2 p.m. The match against the Bulls is UMES' fourth consecutive road game as the Hawks will remain on the road until the third week of January.
