BALTIMORE, Md. - Shawntae Payne scored a game-high 14 points and Larrissa Carter added 12 points and 13 rebounds as Coppin State defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 62-50, at the Physical Education Complex Saturday.
Coppin State improved to 10-14 and 7-5 in the MEAC with the win. UMES fell to 8-17 and 5-7 in the league with the loss.
Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) paced UMES with his her first career double-double. The junior had 13 points and career highs of 11 rebounds and seven blocks. It marked the first time a UMES player had seven blocked shots since April McBride did so against Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 26, 2009.
Payne was 4-for-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to help Coppin State to its first win against UMES in four games. Kyra Coleman chipped in with nine points and 15 rebounds while Leola Spotwood had five points and 10 rebounds.
Coppin State jumped out to a 17-3 advantage in the game's first eight minutes behind six points from Dawnnae Roberts and four from Payne.
UMES cut it to a 21-15 margin at the 7:05 mark as Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon. N.Y.) ignited a 12-4 run with a layup with 10:49 remaining. Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) later hit a shot in transition to make it 18-7 and Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) converted a layup to make it 21-14 before a Courtney Braxton (Virginia Beach, Va.) free throw.
The Eagles then used an 8-3 stretch to extend their advantage to double digits when Coleman hit a layup for a 29-18 edge with 2:40 left in the opening half.
Coppin State led, 35-20, at halftime. Payne led all players with 11 points on 4-of-8 shoot in the first period.
Cook hit a pair from the line to cut the Eagles' led to 12, 40-28, with 14:53 left but CSU ran off six straight points, highlighted by a Jessica Mayes 3-pointer, taking a 46-28 lead.
UMES responded with a 9-0 run of its own to push the Coppin State advantage to 46-37 with 7:48 left. Agbasi had four for the Lady Hawks in the stretch.
The teams traded baskets until the 4:16 mark when Coleman tallied a layup and Spotwood added another to grow the lead to 54-41 with 3:55 left and Coppin State never looked back.
The Eagles shot 32.3 percent for the game on, making 20 of their 62 attempts while UMES made 14 of 58 shots for 24.1 percent.
Cook and Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) each had seven points. Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) recorded six points in her first career start.
Coppin State outrebounded UMES, 57-42, but committed 25 turnovers to the Lady Hawks' 23.
UMES heads to Morgan State on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off.
