MORGAN STATE TOPS UMES, 58-56, IN OVERTIME

BALTIMORE, Md. - Erin Hawkins made two free throws with 24 seconds remaining in overtime as Morgan State slipped by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 58-56, at Hill Field House Monday.

UMES led, 56-52 with 2:08 left in overtime on a pair from the line by Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) when Moneshia Davis knocked down a jumper and Brittany Noel hit another shot on an assist from Mahala Thomas to tie the game at 56-all with 1:14 to play.

Hawkins stole a Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) pass and was fouled after a Morgan State timeout, setting up the winning free throws.

Sanders scored a game-high 17 points for UMES (8-18, 5-8 MEAC), leading a group of four players in double figures. Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with 14, Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) had 12 and LaKendra (Greensboro, N.C.) finished with 10. Agbasi (six blocks), who was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, pulled down 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double while Wikerson had 10 boards for her first career double-double.

Hawkins led three Morgan State (15-11, 9-3) players in double digits with 15 and five assists, Davis tallied 13 and Noel had 11.

UMES opened the second half on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 32 with 16:37 left. Wilkerson capped the spurt with a three-point play.

The Lady Bears then used an 8-3 run, highlighted by a 3-pointers from Noel and Hawkins, to take a 40-34 edge at with 12:37 left.

A Cook layup with 9:51 left cut it to a 42-41 game but MSU quickly lengthened the lead to seven, as Kyla Rollins and Noel had the last five on a 7-1 run for a 49-42 advantage with 6:27 remaining.

From there, UMES engineered a 10-2 stretch to take a 52-51 with 1:02 left. The run was ignited by an Agbasi jumper and Sanders steal and layup and finished when Cook hit two free throws.

Hawkins then knocked down 1-of-2 free throws with 12 seconds left and Wilkerson missed a jumper at the buzzer to send the game to the extra session.

UMES jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first three-and-a-half minutes on four points each by Agbasi and Cook. Morgan State then used a 5-0 run capped by a Davis three-point play at the 15:18 mark to tie the game at the 15:18 mark. The Lady Bears rallied to take a 31-24 lead at halftime.

UMES outrebounded MSU, 46-40, and connected on 19 of their 56 shoots (33.9 percent). The Lady Bears shot 18-for-61 (29.5 percent).

UMES hosts Howard for Homecoming Saturday at 2 p.m.
