PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed five rebounds and Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) recorded 18 points and six boards to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team to a 72-49 win over Norfolk State at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.
Parker shot 7-for-12 from the field while Morton was 5-for-9 for the Lady Hawks, who stopped a two-game losing streak with the win. Norfolk State, which received 12 points from Sarah Daily, dropped its third straight.
UMES (8-14, 5-4 MEAC) led from start to finish. The 72 points scored marked a season high for the Lady Hawks.
UMES jumped out to a 15-7 advantage in the game's first five minutes. Parker tallied eight in the stretch, including a 3-pointer to open the scoring.
NSU (8-11, 1-8) battled back with an 8-0 run to knot the game at 15-15 in less than two minutes. Daily hit a trey and Whitney Long a layup to pull the Spartans even with 13:39 remaining.
The Lady Hawks took the lead for good, 19-17, with a Morton layup with 9:07 left in the half. The basket sparked a 7-2 run for UMES that LaKendra Wilkerson (Greensboro, N.C.) capped with a three-point play at the 6:08 mark. UMES led by as many as 10, 32-33, on an Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) free throw with 2:29 before the break, taking a 32-24 edge into the locker room when Norfolk State's Tyisha Bridges converted a fastbreak layup in the final minute.
Parker led all players with 12 points in the period.
The Spartans scored the first four points of the second half to cut the deficit to 32-28 when Rae Corbo and Marian Brooks hit shots, but UMES rattled off 12 of the next 16 to extend its lead to 44-32 with 11:50 remaining.
Wilkerson started the stretch with a pair from the line and Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.), who scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half, added a three-point play to give UMES some space at 37-28 with 15:39 left.
Sanders later knocked down a 3-pointer and Morton converted another three-point play to push it to a 43-32 game.
Norfolk State didn't mount another serious threat the rest of the way as UMES built its biggest lead of the day on a pair of free throws by Parker to make it 65-41 with 4:13 left.
UMES shot 36.1 (22-for-61) percent from the floor in the game, including 40 percent in the first half. Norfolk State was 33.3 percent (17-of-51).
The Lady Hawks outrebounded the Spartans, 52-36, turning 26 offensive boards into 21 points. UMES also scored 13 points off 17 NSU turnovers. UMES, itself, made a season-low 14 turnovers and had 14 assists.
Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) just missed a double-double with nine points and game-high 10 rebounds, She also tallied four blocks.
