PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Long Island's 3, 4 and 5 batters combined for eight runs scored, seven hits and seven RBI and Blackbirds' starting pitcher Adam Sauter allowed one earned run on seven hits in 7.2 innings to defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 13-3, at Hawks Stadium Friday.
Tito Marrero drove in four runs and Sam Sciamarelli went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI to help LIU (1-4) to its first win of the season, while Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) continued his torrid start to the season, collecting two of the seven hits for UMES. Johnson is now hitting .463 in his first 10 games. of the season.
The Blackbirds jumped on UMES right-hander Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) for three runs in the first inning. Pete Leonello led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Sciamarelli before a walk loaded the bases. Drew Walsh then reached on a fielder's choice which pushed across the first run of the day and a bases-loaded walk made it 2-0. A James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) error increased the lead to 3-0.
Tyler Jones added an RBI single up the middle in the second and LIU tacked on two more in the third to make it a six-run advantage prior to UMES getting on the board for the first time in the bottom of the fifth.
Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) started the rally with a base hit to shortstop and with one out, Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) tallied another infield single to put runners on first and third. Johnson then reached on an error by Brad Grieve at second base and was out at second attempting to stretch the play, but Campbell scored to make it 8-1. Newsome then reached on a fielder's choice to short to bring in Bagwell.
UMES added another unearned run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 8-3 but LIU scored five runs with two outs in the eighth. The inning was highlighted by two RBI doubles by Sciamarelli and Merrero and a run-scoring sing by Walsh.
Sauter (1-1) earned the win in his 96-pitch outing while Foreman ()-2) absorbed the loss in eight innings for the Hawks. He surrendered 11 hits, 13 runs - 10 earned - and four walks. He also fanned five in 132 pitches.
The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
