Game One Box Score Game Two Box Score
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman first baseman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) combined to go 5-for-7 with six RBIs and four doubles but it was not enough, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's softball team was swept in its home opener by Goldey-Beacom College. The Hawks were unable to hold off a late GBC charge in the first game and fell, 14-7, before the Lightning took advantage of several costly UMES errors to win the nightcap, 10-4.
UMES (0-5) fell behind early in its first contest against Goldey-Beacom (5-4). The Lightning opened up with a three spot in the first, before UMES used a two-RBI double by King to narrow the deficit. GBC would tack another run on in the top of the second to take a 4-2 lead after two innings.
Junior pitcher Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) went on to throw three consecutive scoreless innings. UMES added solo run tallies in the third and fourth, before they took the lead, 5-4, with two runs in the fifth.
The one-run lead did not last for long, as the Lightning benefitted from several costly errors in the sixth and seventh innings. Goldey-Beacom posted five runs in each inning to race away with the victory in the opener.
In the second game of the double dip, the Lightning jumped on the Hawks right from the get go.
After scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, the Lightning put up four in the second to race to a 6-0 lead. Despite the large deficit, the Hawks would rally back.
With one away in the third, sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) singled and was moved over after a Gurrola walk. The pair would each steal a bag and Gurrola eventually came home on a wild pitch. King brought UMES to within four, 6-2, after she doubled to score Williams.
The four-run deficit proved to be short lived for UMES as Goldey-Beacom scored a pair of runs in each of the next two innings to take a 10-2 lead.
UMES capped its scoring in the sixth, when junior Kristen Lee (Bowie, Md.) tripled and scored on an RBI single by Gurrola. Junior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) would continue suit two batters later with a single to move over Gurrola, before King plated Gurrola with a liner up the middle.
Although taking the loss in both games, Gurrola was impressive on the mound. Despite being victimized by 14 errors altogether by her defense, the senior stood strong and threw all 13 innings for the Hawks. The costly amount of errors saw 11 unearned runs cross the plate against the right-hander. She was a dual threat in the doubleheader, where she finished the day 2-for-3 from the plate with five runs scored.
The maroon and gray were led offensively by King's six RBIs, but saw solid results from a trio of others. Williams went 3-for-7 with three runs, while James and senior Cy'Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) hit safely in both games.
Goldey-Beacom was paced by Jordan Waterloo and Samantha Alonzo, who combined to go 7-for-9 with five RBIs and five runs in the first game. Michelle Foster was the top performer for GBC in the second game, where she was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Ashley Antosh took the game-one victory after allowing just one-earned run in three innings of relief, while Roni Peters struck out four in four innings to collect the win in game two.
UMES opens up its play in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference when the Hawks host Savannah State University in a doubleheader, tomorrow, at 11 a.m.
