WASHINGTON - Despite multiple comebacks against Georgetown, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team were unable to complete the rally as they dropped their season opener to the Hoyas, 88-75.

Within the first two minutes of the second half, UMES went on a 6-0 run to trim the deficit, 44-34. Georgetown's Katie McCormick nailed a three-pointer to spark a 7-2 run for the Hoyas, 51-36. Maryland Eastern Shore crawled back into the contest with another 6-0 run to narrow the gap to single-digits, 51-42. Georgetown's defense forced multiple Lady Hawks' turnovers as they went on a 12-0 run to give them the largest lead of the game, 63-42. UMES refused to give up as they chipped away at the deficit. With less than five remaining, the Lady Hawks trailed by ten after a long ball from Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand). Despite the valiant effort, UMES would eventually fall to the Hoyas, 88-75.

Other notable Hawk performances included senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) recording a team-high 15 points. Subritzky and Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) each posted 13 points while Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) added 10 points off the bench.

In the opening minutes of the game, UMES trailed, 9-6, after back-to-back long balls from Sweeney and Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.). With less than 14 minutes remaining the half, the Hoyas pushed their lead to nine, 18-9, but UMES answered with a quick 6-0 run, 18-15. Within the next six minutes, Georgetown began to create separation from the Hawks as they led, 26-18, after a three-pointer by the Hoyas' McCormick. UMES' turnovers began to turn into points for Georgetown as they close out the half on an 18-10 run, 44-28.

For Georgetown, Dominique Vitalis and Dorothy Adomako each notched a double-double. Vitalis finished with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds while Adomako recorded 17 points and a game-high 14 boards in the victory.
