Box Score

Blacksburg, Va. - After scoring 75 points in their season opener against Georgetown, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team was unable to duplicate the same performance as they fell to Virginia Tech, 63-41, inside the Cassell Coliseum. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-2 on the season while the Hokies improved to 1-1 overall.

UMES was held to 24-percent on the day (13-of-54) and could not find any rhythm beyond the arc, shooting eight-percent (2-of-24). Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) recorded her second consecutive double-double by tallying team highs in points (15) and rebounds (12).

Despite the deficit after halftime, 31-12, Maryland Eastern Shore battled back as they trimmed the Hokies' lead after a fast-break layup from Udoji, 43-25, with more than 13 minutes remaining in the game. Within the next five minutes, Virginia Tech went on a 9-2 run to grab their largest lead of the game, 52-27. UMES continued to fight as they cut the deficit to fifteen, 54-39, at the 3:30 mark. The hole was too much for the Lady Hawks as Virginia Tech ended the game on a 9-2 run to win by the final score 63-41.

Junior TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) notched 14 points and three boards while senior guard Jessica Long added seven points, six rebounds, and three assists in a losing effort.

Over 11 minutes into the contest, UMES went scoreless until two freebies by New Zealand-native Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland) ended the drought. Within seconds, Burke nailed a three-pointer to give UMES their first field goal in the game, 14-5. In the next five minutes, the Hokies began to hit shots as they went on a 7-0 run to balloon their lead, 21-5. Burke tried to keep the Lady Hawks into the game as she scored five consecutive points, 21-10. In the final four minutes of the half, Virginia Tech outscored the Lady Hawks, 10-2, to hold a 31-12 advantage going into halftime.

Virginia Tech was led by Taijah Campbell and Rachel Camp. Both Hokies recorded double-doubles as Campbell posted a team-high 15 points and 10 boards while Camp tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.

UMES returns to the hardwood this Thursday (11/20) to take on Virginia Commonwealth. The contest is the Lady Hawks' home opener. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
