PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After two tough road games against Georgetown and Virginia Tech, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team came home to face Atlantic-10 foe Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) in their home opener. UMES was unable to slow down VCU's hot shooting from beyond the arc as they fell to the Rams, 72-50. With the setback, the club dropped to 0-3 on the season while VCU improved to 3-1 overall.
Senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) scored a game-high 17 points, netting 15 points after intermission. Long only had five attempts in the contest, but very efficient as she shot 60-percent (3-of-5) from the field. The Fort Washington-native aggressively attacked the rim, going to the line 16 times while making 11 freebies. With her efforts, Long moved into eighth place on the all-time made free throws list, surpassing Kristi Sheldon (1996-99).
Within the first three minutes in the second half, the Rams opened on an 8-0 run to extended their lead, 47-22. After a layup from Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) ended the run, VCU continued to put the pressure on by outscoring the Lady Hawks 12-5 within a five minute window. Maryland Eastern Shore found themselves trailing the Rams, 59-29, with more than 12 minutes to play in regulation. In the next six minutes, UMES went on a 15-5 run to cut the deficit, 66-44. At the end, the hole was too great for the Lady Hawks to comeback from as they fell to the Rams, 72-50.
Senior guard Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) ended her night with 12 points, five boards, and a steal. Despite a tough night from the field, Sweeney made history as she moved into a second place tie on the all-time made three-pointers list with 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Year and local native Casey Morton (2008-11).
Other notable Hawks included Udoji posting 11 points, seven boards, and five blocks while Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) added eight points, all in the first half, and a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
Less than two minutes into the game, VCU held an early 4-0 advantage until Subritzky nailed a three-pointer to put UMES on the board, 4-3. The New Zealand-native had the hot-hand early in the contest as she scored the first eight points for the Lady Hawks. Despite Moy's hot-hand, the Lady Hawks trailed VCU, 14-8, at the 11:02 mark. Over the next five minutes, the Rams made baskets; however, Maryland Eastern Shore countered with a made basket of their own. With less than six minutes remaining before intermission, UMES was behind only eight, 26-18. Towards the end of the half, VCU's full-court press began to create Lady Hawk turnovers as they ended the half on a 13-4 run to give them a double-digit halftime lead, 39-22.
For the Rams, they shot 50-percent (9-of-18) from beyond the arc, led by Isis Thorpe and Ashley Pegram. Thorpe finished with a team-high 15 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, while Pegram had 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point land.
Maryland Eastern Shore has a quick turnaround as they head to Huntington, W.V. to face Marshall for the first time this Saturday (11/22). Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
