LAST TIMEOUT

Last Monday (12/22), the Lady Hawks fell short to Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), 87-78, at the Hytche Center as the team shot nearly 48-percent (10-of-21) from long range.

UMBC took a one-point lead at intermission, 38-37, and opened the second period on a 16-4 run to take a double-digit lead, 54-41. UMES went on a 10-3 run to narrow the gap, 57-51, with 11:30 remaining. Within the next four minutes, the Retrievers regained the momentum and outscored Maryland Eastern Shore, 12-6 and held a commanding lead, 69-57. UMES slowly chipped away at the Retriever's lead and trailed by one possession with less than two minutes to go. Toward the end, UMBC nailed several freebies down the stretch to clinch the victory, 87-78.

TOP PERFORMERS

Five Lady Hawks notched double-figures, led by freshman guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.). The Raleigh-native went 5-of-6 from downtown and finished with a team-high 19 points and four boards. Fellow freshman Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) filled the stat sheet as she recorded 10 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds, four blocks, and two steals in a losing effort.

Other notable Hawk performances included TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) scoring 14 points off the bench while Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) and Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) combined for 24 points and 12 boards in the loss.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

Tuesday's contest will be the fifth meeting between UMES and Monmouth with the Lady Hawks trailing the all-time series, 4-0. Last season, Maryland Eastern Shore came up short to Monmouth, 67-65, despite outscoring the opposition in the second half, 37-31.

In that game, four Lady Hawks were in double-figures, led by Sweeney posting a team-high 13 points. Udoji recorded her fifth career double-double, 10 points and 11 boards, while Burke and Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) combined for 22 points in the loss.

After starting the season 3-1, Monmouth has dropped their last four-out-of-six games (2-4); thus, falling to .500 overall (5-5). Monmouth looks to get back into the win column before resuming conference play against Iona this Friday (01/02). Sarah Olson and Jenny Horvantinovic guide the Hawks this season. Olson leads the squad in scoring (12.0) and minutes (31.4) whereas Horvantinovic is second on the team in points (11.1), but leads the club in total steals (15).

For the Lady Hawks, they enter 4-7 overall and look to snap a three-game skid before the New Year. Maryland Eastern Shore holds a 4-3 home record while outrebounding the opposition almost five boards-per-contest (4.5). In the absence of senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.), Sweeney has increased her role as a scorer, averaging 12.7 points-per-game (PPG) in those three contests. Additionally, the Virginia-native has shot nearly 38-percent (6-of-16) from beyond the arc in that span, compared to 21-percent (8-of-39) in the first eight games.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

UMES returns to the hardwood in 2015 as they resume conference play at the Morgan State Bears. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
