Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After 12 failed attempts, dating back to 1980, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team defeated Mount St. Mary's for the first time in the program's history, 58-43, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The squad picked up their second victory on the season.

With the win, UMES improved to 2-4 overall, riding a two-game winning streak, while the Mount fell to 1-5 on the season.

For the second straight game, the Lady Hawks held the opposition under 30-percent from the field (15-of-55). The club also outrebounded Mount St. Mary's, 44-32, and scored 23 baskets on 17 assists in the contest. Junior Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) posted her first career double-double, 10 points and 10 boards, after shooting 83-percent (5-of-6) from the floor. Newcomer Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) notched a game-high 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists in the win.

After taking a 12-point halftime lead, 31-19, Subritzky nailed a three-pointer on the Lady Hawks' first possession after intermission. The Mount battled back as they trimmed the deficit down to single-digits, 41-33, with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Within the next three minutes, the Lady Hawks pushed and held a double-digit lead until back-to-back freebies by the Mount's Jenn Carney cut the margin to nine, 47-38. Sophomore Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) hit a critical long ball to swing the momentum back into UMES' favor. Maryland Eastern Shore never looked back as they closed the game on an 11-5 run to win, 58-43.

Other notable performances included Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) registering 11 points, five boards, four assists, and two blocks. Senior Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) added a career-high eight rebounds, six points, and four assists in the victory. Furthermore, Sweeney climbed the three-point leaderboard as she surpassed Casey Morton (2008-11) and moved to second on the all-time list.

After back-to-back buckets from Kelly to open the game, Mount St. Mary's called a quick timeout to slow down UMES' run. The Mount came out and took the lead, 5-4, but a jumper from Udoji gave the Lady Hawks the lead back, 6-5. Both squads exchanged the lead four times within the first six minutes. At the 14:16 mark, the Lady Hawks held a one-point lead, 11-10, and never relinquished. UMES outscored the Mount in the paint, 18-6, in the first period, which was the difference in the contest. In the final three-and-a-half minutes before intermission, Maryland Eastern Shore went on a 9-1 run to take a double-digit halftime lead, 31-19.

For the Mount, Carney and Jacqueline Brewer each recorded 11 points. Both players combined for 7-of-19 from the floor, including 5-of-13 from downtown, in the loss.

This Saturday (12/06), the Lady Hawks look to stay hot against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe North Carolina Central. This will be the conference opener for both teams. Tip-off is booked for 2:00 p.m.
