PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In the fifth episode of the Battle of the Hawks, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team flew to victory as they knocked off the Monmouth Hawks, 86-73, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The win also clinched the Lady Hawks' first-ever win over Monmouth, dating the series back to 2000.
Maryland Eastern Shore (5-7) scored a season-high 86 points while erasing an 11-point first half deficit. Offensively, the Lady Hawks shot a season-high 47-percent (25-of-53) from the floor and attacked the basket nonstop. The squad went to the charity stripe a season-high 42 times and nailed 32 freebies, another season-high.
After sitting nearly 16 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, junior forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) had a tremendous second period as she finished with her fifth double-double on the season, posting 22 points and 10 boards. Freshman guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) had another stellar performance as she notched her second career double-double, tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds, in the victory.
Less than two minutes after intermission, Monmouth tied the contest after a three-pointer by Jenny Horvatinovic, 42-42. UMES regained the lead as they went on a 9-2 run, capped off by a fast-break layup from Udoji, 51-44. Within a matter of minutes, Monmouth reclaimed the momentum as they held a one-point advantage at the 13:33 mark, 53-52. Maryland Eastern Shore battled back and tied the game, 55-55, with more than 12 minutes remaining. Next, Monmouth recaptured and took a seven-point lead after going on an 11-4 spurt, 66-59, with 10:38 to go. In the next six minutes, the Lady Hawks gradually chipped away at the deficit and took back the lead after Udoji's layup, 73-72. Once reclaiming the upper-hand, UMES would not relinquish the lead as they closed out the game on a 13-1 run to win, 86-73.
Other notable Hawk performances included junior TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) playing 24 minutes in a reserve role to record 20 points on 64-percent (7-of-11) shooting. Meanwhile, senior guard Shawnee Sweeney added 12 points and four boards in a game-high 35 minutes of action.
Furthermore, fellow senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) returned to action after missing the last three contests. The Fort Washington-native came off the bench and made an immediate impact on both ends of the court. Long ended her afternoon registering seven points, six assists, and five steals in the victory.
For nearly three minutes, the game was scoreless until a layup from Monmouth's Helena Kurt ended the drought, 2-0. Short after, Sweeney's layup put UMES on the board and both teams were deadlocked, 2-2, at the 16:55 mark. Over the next five minutes, Monmouth found offensive rhythm as they went on a 13-5 run to take an eight-point advantage, 15-7. Within the next three minutes, it was the Lady Hawk's turn as they cut the deficit down to a one-possession game, 17-15. Monmouth kept their composure and seized control after multiple double-digit leads, including an 11-point advantage at the 5:33 mark. Maryland Eastern Shore refused to give in as they went on another spurt, outscoring the opposition 14-3, and tying the contest, 37-37, with more than two minutes remaining before intermission. In the final minutes, UMES' momentum continued as they closed out the half scoring five unanswered points to take a halftime lead, 42-37.
For Monmouth (5-6), Horvatinovic posted a game-high 22 points, including 5-of-8 from downtown. Mia Hopkins came off the bench and tallied 20 points on 69-percent (9-of-13) shooting before fouling out.
On Jan. 12, UMES returns to the hardwood as they resume conference play at the Morgan State Bears. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
