BALTIMORE - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team was unable to keep up with the Morgan State Lady Bears as they fell, 72-62, inside the Hill Field House.
With the setback, the Lady Hawks dropped to 5-8 (2-1 MEAC) while Morgan State moved to 5-11 (2-2 MEAC) on the season.
Senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) racked up her second career double-double, posting 20 points and 11 boards. Junior forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) notched her sixth double-double on the season, recording 11 points and 12 rebounds, in a losing effort.
Following a halftime lead, 33-32, UMES extended the lead after a long ball from Long, 45-41, with less than 16 minutes remaining. Within the next two minutes, Morgan State made a run and erased the deficit to go ahead after three-pointer by Tracey Carrington, 48-47. Short after, UMES regained the lead after Long's layup, but Morgan State's second half rally continued. Over the next seven minutes, the Lady Bears went on an 18-8 spurt to hold a commanding double-digit lead, 66-55. Maryland Eastern Shore refused to give up as they made one final run. UMES cut the deficit to five, 67-62, after a made freebie from TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.), but the Lady Bears ended the game scoring the final five points to win, 72-62.
Other notable Hawk performance included Burke scoring 15 points off the bench. UMES could not find any offensive rhythm as they were held to 29-percent (22-of-77) from the field.
More than five minutes into the game, Morgan State held a one-point advantage until Udoji's layup gave UMES its first lead of the game, 12-11. Maryland Eastern Shore never relinquished the first half lead. The Lady Hawks had an eight-point lead with less than four minutes remaining before intermission, 31-23, but Morgan State battled back as they closed out the first period on a 9-2 run to pull the contest within one-possession, 33-32.
For the Lady Bears, Carrington had a game-high 24 points while shooting 83-percent (10-of-12) from the charity stripe. Danielle Robinson and Braennan Farrar each registered 11 points in the win.
This Saturday (01/17), the Lady Hawks return to the Hytche Center to face Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Player of the Year winner Ezinne Kalu and the Savannah State Tigers. Game-time is set for 2 p.m.
