Jan. 12, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore track runner Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) and senior men's basketball forward Mike Myers (Camden, N.J.) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on January 12th. Rmidi Kinini is being named for the seventh time and the second consecutive week while Myers is being named for the fourth time.
Rmidi Kinini toppled yet another record this past Saturday with his performance at the Navy Invite. He broke a nearly nine year old record in the 5000 meter run, blazing past the old time by a full twenty-one seconds with his pace of 14:26.94. Alfred Singoei set the original mark with a time of 14:47.95 back in 2006. Khalil has already broken the mile run and 3000 meter records so far this season.
Myers has been racking up double-doubles at a furious pace, and last Wednesday against NJIT was no different. He led the Hawks with 29 points while also picking up 16 boards, a pair of assists, a block and a steal. The effort was his third straight double-double, going back to the December 28th matchup against Duquesne. Myers is currently averaging 15.4 points per game and 7.0 rebounds, both team highs.
HONORABLE MENTION: Senior Dillon Simon (Roseau, Dominica) broke his own school record in the indoor shot put with a toss of 19.03 meters. His previously mark of 18.81 meters was set back in February 2014.
